# Mental Health Crisis Intervention

## When someone you love is in crisis

A mental health crisis is a moment of severe distress, when a person may be at risk of harming themselves or someone else and the priority is safety. The clearest sign is suicidal thinking. When someone says they want to hurt themselves, take it seriously and respond promptly, calmly, and with professional help.

If someone you care about is having suicidal thoughts, the first job is keeping them safe and getting them to crisis support as fast as possible: a licensed mental health provider, a crisis line, or emergency services.

## Signs a crisis needs immediate action

- Suicidal thoughts or statements
- Sudden changes in mood or behavior
- Hopelessness or despair
- Agitation, withdrawal, or emotional instability
- Risk of harm to themselves or others

Noticing these early lets a family act in time.

- Depression

- Substance use disorders

Torchlight provides non-clinical support: intervention, case management, and recovery coaching. We are not doctors, therapists, or a medical provider. If you or a loved one is having severe suicidal thoughts, talking about self-harm, or is a danger to themselves or others, that needs immediate medical attention. Call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency room or crisis center right away. We work alongside licensed professionals, but emergency and clinical care must come from them.
